Coastal Communities Director

Kusilvak Rising, Inc. (KR) is currently accepting applications and nominations to fill a vacant seat on its Board of Directors representing the Coastal Communities region, including:
Hooper Bay ★ Scammon Bay ★ Chevak

Kusilvak Rising is a regional nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing economic development, workforce opportunities, and community-driven initiatives that support long-term prosperity across the Kusilvak region. The Board of Directors plays a critical role in guiding organizational strategy, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring the organization remains responsive to community priorities.

Position Overview
The Coastal Communities Director will represent the interests, perspectives, and priorities of coastal communities and help guide the organization’s work in areas such as:
• Economic development and job creation • Workforce training and career pathways for youth and adults • Regional infrastructure and capacity-building initiatives • Partnerships with tribes, schools, municipalities, and regional organizations • Strategic planning and organizational governance
Required Qualifications
Applicants should meet the following minimum qualifications:
• Prior experience serving on a board of directors, tribal council, municipal council, nonprofit board, corporate board, or similar governing body • No felony convictions within the past ten (10) years • Demonstrated understanding of community needs and regional economic conditions • Ability to participate constructively in board deliberations and decision-making • Commitment to ethical governance and organizational accountability

Preferred Qualifications
The Board has expressed a preference for candidates who:
• Currently reside in Hooper Bay, Scammon Bay, Chevak, or nearby coastal communities • Have knowledge of government contracting, economic development, workforce development, or related fields • Bring leadership experience in tribal, municipal, corporate, nonprofit, or regional organizations • Are committed to improving long-term economic outcomes for Kusilvak region communities

Time Commitment & Travel
Board members generally participate in quarterly meetings and occasional special meetings as needed. Meetings are typically held via teleconference or videoconference; however, periodic in-person meetings or regional gatherings may occur, which may involve travel within Alaska.
As resources allow, Kusilvak Rising anticipates providing honoraria for board meeting participation and reimbursement for approved travel expenses in accordance with organizational policy and available funding.
